Policing The Human Condition

Updated: Nov 26, 2020

We Need The Police More Than You Think

In another blog I stated that as humans, we all want the same things: to be loved, accepted, included and have the "best life" etc. I truly believe this statement, but there is a reason why this hasn't yet been attained and / or normalized in our society. There's a different side to the human condition we need to address which is environmental hostility. I am sorry to say that as humans, we can be violent and unremorseful individuals seeking self gain by ANY means necessary.

With that said, who do we have to curb the violent human condition? Who do we have to step in and stop "Human on Human" crimes? The answer is the Police. Keep reading and let me know what you think.

Strap in reader(s) - it's open Mic night and I have the stage.

Without formally defining the word Policing, we know that a Police Officer’s duty is to protect and serve the public. But why do the Police need to "protect?" Are they protecting us from another planetary race? Are we being victimized by a breed of flesh eating jungle creatures? No- they are protecting us from us - our own human race! Let that sink in for a moment.

As humans we have (or some of us have) the innate conception of what is harmful to ourselves and others but, for some reason, the predatory gene gets the best of us at times. To control our own harmful and threatening actions, we as humans needed to come up with a solution to ensure we don't harm others or ourselves. And that solution was the Police.

Let's look back at a time before there was organized police departments. A time when you couldn't call 911, report a crime, request an investigation or have continuous patrol to step in and defend you. To make my point, lets summarize a biblical reference: The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37).

In this parable, a man was taking a trip alone and was attacked by robbers. They beat him, robbed him, and left him nearly dead beside the road.

After awhile, someone came along and saw the man lying beside the road. You would expect this person to stop and do what he could to help. But, instead, he kept going and pretended he did not see. Later, another person came along, but, this person also kept on going.

Finally, a Samaritan man came by. A person who put his own beliefs and indifference behind him, helped rescue this man because it was the right thing to do.

So what can we take away from this parable and directly correlate to why we need the Police?

In my opinion, we as humans need a formal force present at all times to suppress and eliminate human on human crimes. We need the police because they will help with any situation that needs intervention. They will never stop patrolling regardless of the clock. They will be there to stop or intervene with hostile humans. They will not keep a “blind eye” to a blatant injustice. Until the human condition of detrimental decision making can be mitigated, we need the police as much as we need them.

With the many feelings this post may leave you, I say this in closing: It amazes me that we all hate being the victim of an injustice but why do we feel that it is perfectly normal when we are the predator committing an injustice?

Hammurabi's law may of had it right. Brutal and barbaric yes, but it definitely made you double think committing a crime and getting caught.
