Understanding Our Reality

Updated: Nov 26, 2020

Reflecting On Our Existence

There are so many ways to understand our existence. As humans, we have the choice to decide whatever belief "system" we choose to. Regardless of one's self chosen "system" and the answer's we align ourselves to believe, I have contemplated the question of life from a humanistic perspective for a long time and have self-identified to a three word answer I know I can agree with "I DON'T KNOW."

We are born into a world where we know nothing. We don't come out of our mother's womb with pre-installed instructions on exactly how we got here, who we are and what to do. If you have the answer, you're not human and would love to hear it.

From a scientific perspective, the Big Bang Theory is our grip on reality of understanding our existence. Two atoms crashed into each other and made the infinite universe. So where did the atoms originate? How do we even understand what the pre-universe looked like? The atoms had to come from somewhere- or did they appear out nowhere? And, if one universe was created, couldn't those two types of volatile atoms crash again and either birth or kill another universe- even ours? Why can't we find these atoms because, to me, we could harness the power of all existence. But all we know is that we exist on a man made term we call "Earth" rotating and revolving around what we "label" the sun. Just theories.

From a religious perspective, the universe and everything in it is a creation made through His image and likeness. We all know the seven day story of creation (or six day story if you exclude His day of rest on the seventh day), but let's look at the narrative of our original parents - Adam and Eve. Adam and Eve had two son's named Cain and Abel. So, how did the rest of the world procreate? Was information left out of the story, were pages ripped out by our previous religious leaders to secure authority over their followers, was oral tradition forgotten or disrupted by the tin can telephone game? Or did life exist outside the Garden of Eden? All rhetorical questions we really don't have the answers to. Just faith.

Strap in reader(s) - it's open Mic night and I have the stage.

We are immediately born into confusion and, from a young age, we are instructed / disciplined by our caretakers. Our clean slate of nothingness is now tarnished with someone else's belief "system" who, in fact, is "still" trying to figure things out - until death or beyond. As soon as we are born we have already taken one someone else's identity / belief "system."

Children always ask their caretaker,"But why" when being told to obey orders and the answer is always, "Because I said so." The child is left with only having to understand their caretaker's explanation / definition of what is "right". But what really is right? Someones perception of reality, life experiences, street / book knowledge, imitating others or just natural instinct?

Everything on this planet is man made. From our languages, beliefs, traditions, education, society, politics, medicine, science, rules, laws, etc. We are making things up as we along. As humans, we need to have an understanding, we to have need direction, we need to be in control, we need to be all knowing. Is this a bad thing? Maybe not. We as humans can make anything "possible."

Now the word "possible" is a dangerous human term. How do we know what "possible" is. In some people’s vision, "possible" may lead to the benefit or demise for the rest of humanity. My definition of wrong can be your right and my definition of right can be your wrong. So, whose right? The loudest in the room, the most valued person in the room, the most respected in the room? You tell me. All I know is that we follow other people's definition of "possible" either through our acceptance or fear of their belief "system."

Since we all are born and die alone, let's make this the best "possible" world we can live in. What I mean by "possible" is that we are all humans and want the same things. We want to be loved, accepted, treated fairly, included and want a "good life."

As humans, we need to treat each other the way we want to be treated. This to me is the only reality we can truly agree on. Why, because we don't know the meaning of life- we try to create it. I "believe" we are all born with the same wants. So lets treat each other the same. This could start the best reality if we make it "possible."
